## Technical Gelatin and Animal Glue

Animal glue has existed since ancient times, and the first known written procedures for making it date to around 2000 BC. It is still used today, but not everywhere it is claimed to be. This guide separates well-established uses from niche ones, research-stage ideas and outdated claims.

Gelatin, hide glue and bone glue: what's the difference?

All three come from partial breakdown of collagen extracted from skins, bones and connective tissue:

- **Hide glue:** generally stronger than bone glue.
- **Bone glue:** weaker, suited to applications that don't need high gel strength.
- **Technical gelatin:** more purified than ordinary glue, but not intended for food or pharmaceutical use.

Real strengths

- Fast initial tack: it tacks quickly as it gels, which suits high-speed machines.
- Gap-filling: it bridges joints that don't fit closely.
- Reversible: it can be reactivated with heat and moisture, which is valued in restoration and instrument making.
- Protein origin: it is biodegradable.

Real limits

- **Moisture-sensitive:** it is not suited to outdoor or damp environments.
- **Ageing:** it can darken and shrink, which can harm wood, paper and artworks.
- **Process control:** it is applied hot so it penetrates before gelling.

Well-established applications

1\. Gummed tape. This is its strongest use. Animal glue is the primary adhesive in reinforced tapes used to seal commercial shipping cartons, activated by light moistening. Some formulations require hide glue with a gel strength of at least 100 g.

2\. Cartons, boxes and case making. It is used in rigid box and case making, and in closing cartons on high-speed machines. It is not the main binder in corrugated board, where starch adhesives dominate.

3\. Bookbinding. It has long been used for binding and case making. Today archival PVA is common, and animal glue remains for traditional binding and conservation work.

4\. Woodworking and instruments. Many luthiers prefer hide glue for its reversibility, creep resistance and tendency to pull joints closed as it cures. It is limited to interior use.

5\. Match heads. Gelatin or animal glue binds the oxidizer (potassium chlorate), fuel (sulfur or antimony trisulfide), powdered glass and fillers into a mass on the splint. The formulation may include a separate foaming agent.

6\. Sandpaper. It bonds abrasive grains to paper backing.

7\. Copper electro-refining. Glue is added, usually with thiourea and chloride, to improve cathode quality by suppressing dendrite growth and smoothing surface deposits. Note on dosing: Precise dosing (0.05-0.2 mg/L) is critical during electrorefining. Over-dosing technical gelatin or animal glue can lead to excessive cathode polarization or increased deposit brittleness, negatively affecting cathode quality. Do not assume the same result or dosing for zinc or cadmium without independent testing.

8\. Amino acid extraction. Collagen hydrolysate serves as a source for hydroxyproline and other amino acid fractions. Note: While collagen-derived amino acids are used in synthesis, technical and industrial-grade gelatins are strictly non-food and non-pharma materials and must never be processed for human consumption or pharmaceutical use without dedicated food/pharma regulatory certifications.

Niche applications

**Gypsum plaster and joint compound.** Hydrolyzed animal protein, including glue powder, retards the setting of gypsum and extends working time. There is no evidence that it strengthens the plaster or prevents shrinkage cracks, and some patents note that ordinary retarders reduce strength.

**Leather.** Gelatin and collagen hydrolysate serve as retanning agents and fillers. Tanneries are also a source of gelatin from waste. Use as a wastewater flocculant is limited to research.

#### Claims that don't hold up

**Chipboard and fiberboard.** Hide-glue-based particleboards remain experimental, and standard industry formulations continue to rely on synthetic resins. While technical gelatin and hide glues qualify as No-Added-Formaldehyde (NAF) binders, natural wood substrates naturally emit trace amounts of background aldehydes. Therefore, boards should be designated as NAF or ultra-low emitting rather than claiming absolute zero emissions.

**Carpet backing.** SBR latex is the most common polymer for backing adhesives. Jute serves as backing fabric rather than as a gelatin-impregnated layer.

**Quick comparison**

| **Property** | **Bone and hide glue** | **PVA** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Initial tack | High | Medium |
| Reversible | Yes | No |
| Moisture resistance | Poor | Better |
| Colour change with age | Can darken | Less |
| Best fit | Specific industries and restoration | General purpose |

What to ask your supplier?

Request batch specifications suited to your application, such as gel strength, viscosity, moisture, ash, pH and raw material type (hide or bone). Trial each batch on your line before buying in bulk.

### Q. Is it a replacement for synthetic resins?

In specific applications, yes. In general, no.

### Q. Is technical gelatin edible?

No, Technical gelatin and hide glues are produced for industrial, non-food, and non-pharmaceutical applications only. They do not meet food-grade or pharmaceutical hygiene and purity standards and must never be used in food, animal feed, or supplement products.
